ENABLE Scotland has recently produced a set of two booklets about sexual abuse for adults with learning disabilities and their carers.
One is in an easy-read format for adults with learning disabilities who have experienced sexual abuse. It describes what sexual abuse is, how people can protect themselves from abuse, and what they can do if they have been abused.
The complementary booklet is for parents, carers or support workers of adults with learning disabilities. It covers how to support someone who has been sexually abused and lists sources of help and support.
As more and more people with learning disabilities are living independently, the issue of sex and relationships is becoming an important part of people’s lives. This pack will benefit people with learning disabilities who are exploring their sexuality and may be recognising themselves as survivors of sexual abuse.
We know from our work with parents, carers and people with learning disabilities that a booklet with accessible written and graphic information can be a good way to start a discussion about sensitive topics or those that are difficult to articulate.
