Feminist Fridays

Monday, 7th December, 2009

Sexualized and objectifying images of women in so called 'lads mags' are becoming more and more available in today's society. Despite industry guidance, retailers such as WHSmith often display these magazines at eye level alongside other magazines. These images are offensive to women and demean our place in society, sending negative messages about our sexual availability, and our physical worth.

As part of the 16 days of action to end violence against women, NUS Scotland Women's Campaign organised Glasgow’s first ‘Feminist Friday’, to show our objection to these magazines, and the way that they are displayed in newsagents.

Twelve activists including students and local feminists took part in the rush-hour stunt which saw ‘lads mags’ on display at WHSmith at Queen Street Station and Sauchiehall Street covered up with brightly coloured sleeves bearing statements such as ‘Love Sex, Hate Sexism’, and ‘Women not Sex Objects’. Members of the public were also encouraged to sign a petition calling for ‘lads mags’ to be regulated as part of the porn industry.
