16 Days of Activism for the Elimination of Gender Violence films and training, November 9th and 10th 2009, Dumfries

Dumfries and Galloway Domestic Abuse and Violence Against Women Partnership will be running two training events at the Robert Burns Film Theatre in Dumfries. Both events will be facilitated by Dr Mairead Tagg, who will discuss the issues dealt with in the films.

10am Weds 9th Dec “Provoked”
Aishwarya Rai, Miranda Richardson, Naveen Andrews, Nandita Das, Robbie Coltrane. Provoked is the true story of Kiranjit Ahluwalia, a Punjabi woman who sets fire to her husband after experiencing 10 years of domestic violence. She is sentenced to life imprisonment but is bought to justice through the campaigning of the Southall Black Sisters.

1pm Thurs 10 Dec “Born into Brothels”
Zana Briski, Ross Kauffman. Oscar winning documentary about children who live in the red light district of Calcutta, where their mothers work as prostitutes. Zana Briski, a New York-based photographer, gives each of the children a camera and teaches them to look at the world with new eyes

Each session will last for approx 2 and a half to 3 hours.
