New SWA briefings

Scottish Women's Aid is pleased to launch the first three in a new series of information briefings to be published over the coming months. The first briefings examine the relationship between domestic abuse and alcohol use, the impact of domestic abuse on women's health and the impact of domestic abuse on children and young people.

Women’s International E-Parliament launched

The WIEP is a charitable, non-profit organisation that exists in order to assist women all over the world to gain equal rights with men and to escape from gender-related oppression.
The group has been formed as an online discussion forum in which democratic decisions can be made by members on campaign actions for women’s rights. Our website is http://www.wiep.org/ – please feel free to take a look.

Rape Crisis Scotland Volunteer Support Workers

Rape Crisis Scotland is looking to recruit new  female volunteer support workers for the national helpline which provides crisis support and information for survivors of sexual violence daily from 6pm to midnight.

A full internal training programme will be offered over a period of 13 weeks, starting early in May 2010 through to early August 2010.

New report on supporting women and girls involved in serious youth violence

Specialist services and policies targeting women and girls involved in gangs are needed to help reduce and prevent youth violence, says a new report by Race on the Agenda (ROTA).

The Female Voice in Violence report draws on face-to-face research with 352 friends, relatives, victims or perpetrators of gangs and gang violence. Ranging in age from 13-52, the experiences of these women and girls highlight lessons for policy makers and those working to prevent serious youth violence.

Rock against Domestic Abuse

For the first time, Angus has this year held a regional heat in the UK Rock Challenge. The event was held in Webster's Theatre, Arbroath on Tuesday evening with 5 Angus Secondary Schools taking part. It was an excellent evening with the schools delivering five exceptionally professional performances on different themes.

Montrose Academy was declared the outright winner for their performance of Dance/Music on the theme of Domestic Abuse and they will now compete in a national final in Grimsby later in the year.

Scottish Women's Aid Toolkits available

Scottish Women's Aid  have a number of toolkits available to collect for free from their Edinburgh office.  Alternatively they can be posted at a cost of £11.00

The toolkit was produced to help organisations develop and improve their services to women, Children and Young people affected by domestic abuse, in addition to raising awareness about the nature of domestic abuse.  The toolkit was produced in 2003 therefore contact information contained in the kit may be out of date.

Submit Evidence on the Criminal Justice and Licensing Bill

End Prostitution Now update: The Justice Committee at the Scottish Parliament is currently considering amendments to the Criminal Justice and Licensing Bill.  They have issued a call for evidence in relation to the amendment submitted by Trish Godman. This proposes criminalising buying sex, in any setting, and will also criminalise activities which facilitate prostitution, such as providing transport and accommodation.
