Rape and Abuse Support

Role/remit

Provides a comprehensive service including support and information on legal and medical issues arising from rape or sexual/ childhood sexual abuse. Provides face-to-face support, by letter and/or by email. Helpline answered both through the day and on a Mon or Thurs evening from 7-9pm (answer phone for all other times).

Services for:

Support and information for all women who have experienced sexual violence. Support for women who work in prostitution and are raped/sexually assaulted and women who experience rape/ sexual violence in domestic abuse situations. Emotional support for friends, relatives and workers.

Prevention work: primary

Works in partnership through violence against women worker, with other agencies such as the police/ social work/ sexual health/ alcohol support/ drugs action /homeless service/ local hospitals and health services/ city and rural councils. Outreach worker raises awareness through visiting different groups (family groups, women’s groups etc.) to do presentations.

Other prevention work in the area

Violence Against Women (VAW) team which consists of Alcohol Support Ltd; Cyrenians (homeless); Drugs Action and Rape and Abuse Support. Meets on a quarterly basis to discuss ways in which we may inform and challenge the partners and the public on issues of VAW.

Evaluation of prevention work

Awareness raising at appropriate venues such as Domestic Abuse Partnership/ family centres/ universities/ women’s organisations etc through powerpoint, workshops and questions answered.
